Are You Ready to Sell? Try the 10-Things Test
Here's something I've learned after more than 30 years of helping people get their homes ready to sell. Wanting to be ready and being ready are two different things.
Plenty of people tell me they're ready to declutter. They mean it. They're tired of the piles and the stress. But when we start, every single item becomes a "maybe." Maybe someday. Maybe the kids will want it. Maybe I'll need it.
So here's a quick test I share with people before we work together.
Can you name 10 things you're ready to let go of right now?
Not "maybe someday." Not "if I find something better." I mean out the door, gone. The broken lamp in the basement. The exercise bike that holds laundry. The box of cords to nobody knows what.
If you can name 10 things without breaking a sweat, you're ready. You've got momentum, and a good plan will carry you the rest of the way.
If it feels hard, that's okay. It doesn't mean something is wrong with you. Letting go is emotional, especially in a house full of memories. It might just mean you need a little more time, or a gentler place to start.
Either way, here's what I'd suggest.
Start small. Pick one drawer, one shelf, or one corner of the basement. Practice making decisions where the stakes are low. Decision-making is a skill, and it gets easier every time you use it.
Find your real deadline. Talk to your realtor about when you want listing photos taken, then count backward. Knowing your actual date turns "someday" into "this month."
Get a guide if you need one. I'll be honest with you. I only take on clients I believe I can help reach their goal. If you're not quite ready, I'll tell you, and I'll point you to a good next step.
Wherever you are right now, you're not behind. You're just at the beginning.
